Child safety window guards and locks
The under-fives are the most at-risk age group from accidental falls through windows and on balconies. According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), one child under five is admitted to hospital every day after falling from a building.
Children at a young age are naturally curious and keen to explore their surroundings, but at the same time aren’t aware of the possible risks and dangers that accompany their wandering around.
This is when baby proofing comes in handy.
Everything from stairs, socket points, cookers, electrical equipment, cleaning products and heavy furniture, need to be secured, but today our attention is on windows.
Start by examining window areas carefully to make sure that children cannot climb on anything (e.g. furniture or beds) that would place them at a height in which they could easily reach an open window.
Secondly, install child safety window guards, as well as window locks. Safety devices must be in place regardless of whether or not you plan to frequently open that specific window. Children are fast learners, and if the opportunity arises, they will no doubt try to have a go at opening it themselves, so be prepared.
Window locks and window guards are the best way to baby proof a window and avoid preventable household accidents such as falls, so be sure to select a high quality device that is also appropriate to your child’s age and skill level.
