“Baby proofing seemed to be such a simple project, until it was time to baby proof our home.”

As first time grandparents, we knew we wanted to play an integral role in our grandchildren’s lives. We also knew that raising a child today, is far different than when we were new parents.  This seemed especially true in an around the home; a fact that was driven “home” to us when baby proofing our house after the birth of our grand daughter.

child crawling up stepsWe were struck by the new challenges technology presents a parent (or grandparent) baby proofing their home today.  LCD TV’s, laptop computers, home theaters, DVRs, etc. are now commonplace in homes.  Year after year, dramatic increases in the number of home based businesses and/ or “work at home” positions now allow many of us to spend more time in our homes.  However, accompanying this change are the office devices and equipment, once rarely found in homes, now, routinely a part of many home environments.

Each of these products and the rooms in which they reside requires a new baby proofing strategy and solution to help protect our little ones.  A new parent’s support system of family and friends have few if any suggestions about baby proofing these areas in the home as they have little or no experience doing so.

Further complicating life for a new parent, is the increased emphasis by both state and federal regulatory agencies on our children’s safety. They continue to work aggressively, updating recommendations and guidelines for children’s products and safeguards used in and around the home to protect our children. Outcomes to date include a number of revisions to safety guidelines and new recommendations for such staple items as cribs, strollers, high chairs and car seats.

Add to these changes a significant increase in the number of products recalled by manufacturers in the past few years, and when these groups of changes are combined, it becomes very clear that our home environments have been dramatically restructured in a very short period of time.

How is a new parent to stay current on this rapidly changing landscape?
