Baby proofing and accidental poisoning

Baby proofing and accidental poisoning When baby proofing a home it’s a good idea to start by get down on your hands and knees and looking around from your baby’s perspective. This not only helps you spot potentially dangerous objects, but it also allows you to understand what your child can or can’t reach, for example certain drawers and cabinets. Whether in the kitchen, the bathroom, the laundry room or the garage, our homes are full of containers that could cause a great deal of harm to a small child who mistakes those colorful liquids or pills for juice or candy. Everything from medicines, bleaches, oven and drain cleaners, paint solvents, polishes, waxes and other toxic items should be kept out of reach, behind a secured latch cabinet or drawer. More than 1 million children under 6 are victims of accidental poisoning each year. This happens because at a young age children tend to explore the world by putting things in their mouth, so the only way to prevent them ‘exploring’ something dangerous is to make sure they don’t have access to it. Use high quality latches designed to be used with your specific cabinetry, and take special care to install them correctly. PLEASE NOTE that child-resistant does not mean childproof. If you plan on relying on containers sporting that label, instead of baby proofing devices such as locks and latches, then allow us to remind you that child-resistant containers are intended to DELAY a child who is trying to open something long enough for an adult to intervene. Most pediatricians in fact agree that if a child is left alone with such a container, it will take him/her no more than 30 minutes to […]

Child safety window guards and locks.

Child safety window guards and locks The under-fives are the most at-risk age group from accidental falls through windows and on balconies. According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), one child under five is admitted to hospital every day after falling from a building. Children at a young age are naturally curious and keen to explore their surroundings, but at the same time aren’t aware of the possible risks and dangers that accompany their wandering around. This is when baby proofing comes in handy. Everything from stairs, socket points, cookers, electrical equipment, cleaning products and heavy furniture, need to be secured, but today our attention is on windows. Start by examining window areas carefully to make sure that children cannot climb on anything (e.g. furniture or beds) that would place them at a height in which they could easily reach an open window. Secondly, install child safety window guards, as well as window locks. Safety devices must be in place regardless of whether or not you plan to frequently open that specific window. Children are fast learners, and if the opportunity arises, they will no doubt try to have a go at opening it themselves, so be prepared. Window locks and window guards are the best way to baby proof a window and avoid preventable household accidents such as falls, so be sure to select a high quality device that is also appropriate to your child’s age and skill level. Child Safety Locks and Latches

Safety locks and latches Dangerous and toxic substances commonly found in laundry rooms, bathrooms or garages, should always be kept out of your baby’s reach. Things like medicines, bleaches, oven and drain cleaners, paint solvents, polishes and waxes should all be locked away to prevent your child from hurting himself. In this case, the best way to prevent any household accidents from happening, is installing safety locks for cabinets and drawers. Most baby safe cabinet and drawer safety locks and latches used by your local Baby Safe Homes baby proofing professional are not available directly to the consumer. The devices we install are in fact much better quality, more durable and easier to use than those found in retail stores. It is important to choose the correct latch for each cabinet and drawer based on how the cabinetry was built.  It is typical for our trained installers to utilize more than one style latch to get the job done right!
