Child Safety Tips for Halloween Costumes, Candy and Trick or Treating
There is no doubt about it, kids love Halloween. Getting dressed up, walking through the neighborhood at night, and getting bags of candy – what’s not to love? While your children may be bubbling with excitement, and quite energetic from all the sugar, it’s important to keep safety in mind before trick-or-treating. Here are a few helpful tips on how you can keep your kids safe on Halloween:
- If you aren’t taking your kids trick-or-treating personally, make sure they are with a responsible adult that you trust.
- Children’s costumes should be a lighter color and should not be too long. If your child is wearing a dark color, consider placing reflective tape on their costumes so they are visible in the dark. Glow in the dark bracelets and necklaces will also help.
- Make sure costumes are flame retardant. If you’re making costumes, use polyester or nylon since they are flame retardant.
- Do not allow masks or anything that covers your child’s nose, ears or mouth. Make sure any props they carry are short and flexible and avoid high heels and make sure shoes are sturdy.
- Stay away from any candles or open flames.
- Always carry a flashlight with new batteries, and make sure the kids each have one too.
- Don’t let anyone stray from the pack – stick together at all times! Just in case, attach emergency contact information to costumes.
- Never go inside anyone’s home, and only approach houses that have lights on.
- Don’t allow your kids to eat candy without inspecting it first. Anything opened or homemade should be discarded.
- Stay on the sidewalk and always use crosswalks.
